Our Greenhouse Gas Emissions Performance

Since 2007, greenhouse gas emissions from our Western Canada Gas operations remained relatively unchanged.

Greenhouse Gas Reduction and Energy Efficiency

We are constantly pursuing even small energy efficiency improvements. In 2008, our Western Canada Gas operations group completed 160 energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction projects, including nine large, complex projects and 151 small projects. This work saved approximately 28,300 m³ of gas per day and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. Project highlights include:

• Installing technologies to control air-to-fuel ratios in engines which allows for fuel savings through more efficient engine operation.
• Reducing flare gas by taking flares out of service and flare system purge-gas flow reduction.
• Installing combustion controls on an incinerator to lower fuel-gas usage.
• Consolidating plants and compressors, which saves fuel-gas by shutting down equipment and routing production through other facilities.
• Installing solar power at our wellsites to operate control and communication equipment and chemical-injection pumps.

In 2009 we completed 250 energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction projects consisting of 26 large, complex projects and 224 small projects. This work saved approximately 70,750 m³ of gas per day and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 95,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. Project highlights included:

• Continuing to consolidate plants, reduce flaring, install technologies to control air-to-fuel ratios in engines and employ solar power.
• Installing vent-gas recovery systems, which allow us to use gas that is normally vented from our operations as fuel.
• Modifying wellsite controls and controllers at 400 of our wells.

In 2009 we also developed tools to track these projects and published an internal newsletter focused on greenhouse gas reduction, energy efficiency projects and other environmental initiatives.
