Our greenhouse gas emissions data includes gross greenhouse gas emissions (nitrous oxide, methane and carbon dioxide) for our operating facilities, converted to carbon dioxide equivalent.
The main source of greenhouse gases at the Surmont Phase 1 facility is the steam generators. Greenhouse gases result from the combustion of natural gas, which is used to generate steam.

** Start-up year, Phase 2, partial production
Direct greenhouse gas emissions will increase over the next five years at the Surmont facility. This increase is a result of increased fuel use associated with greater steam generation to steam new wells to be brought online.
