Community Safety

The safety of local communities, our employees and our contractors is our top priority. Our commitment to safety extends beyond our operations to the communities near our projects.

  • We helped form the Willow Lake Traffic Working Group with representatives from Anzac, Fort McMurray First Nations, the regional municipality, Alberta Transportation, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and other interested developers in the area.
  • We, and our joint-venture associate Total E&P Canada, funded an enhanced community policing position for communities near the Surmont project. The officer enforces traffic laws, provides community education and addresses issues in the communities and at the oil sands projects.

Safer 63 and 881 Campaign

Our focus on community health extends to a commitment to fostering safer communities. Over the past two years, we have taken a leadership position in developing the Coalition for a Safer 63 and 881 campaign, targeting driving safety in the region. Additionally, we are a gold-level sponsor through the Surmont project, contributing $50,000 to the campaign for 2010. Driving behaviour, especially along the two busy highways in the area, is a major concern for local stakeholders and employers. A high volume of traffic is exacerbated by unsafe driving practices such as driving while fatigued, speeding and driving with insufficient care and attention. A campaign was launched in April 2010 to help drivers realize they have “tunnel vision” and that changing their behaviour is as easy as taking off their personal “blinders.” Visit their website to find out more about the campaign.
