Oil sands development has introduced a shift in Aboriginal peoples’ way of life. In just a single generation, these communities are transitioning from a traditional economy to a wage-based economy. There is a focus on finding ways for communities to benefit from the industrial development on Crown land that falls within traditional use areas. Additionally, Aboriginal peoples are moving from traditional pursuits, such as hunting and trapping, towards setting up businesses and participating in oil sands development. While many communities have been successful in this endeavour, others are struggling with overcoming barriers to their full participation such as low high-school graduation rates, a lack of training and economic development.

ConocoPhillips Canada is working with these communities to share in the benefits of oil sands development. We are working to build capacity so they can be independent and competitive in a wage-based economy. We focus our engagement and community investment efforts on local priorities. From training and education, to youth-focused programs, to supporting substance abuse treatment centers, we are working with Aboriginal communities to support their aspirations and identify and reduce barriers to participation.
