Our Water Footprint

Our plans for handling water associated with the proposed Parson’s Lake development will evolve in response to future conditions of approval and the progress of detailed engineering. We plan to withdraw freshwater from lakes in the area for uses such as domestic water, winter access road construction, dust suppression, drilling fluid preparation, hydro-testing and wash water for vehicles and equipment. Water withdrawal will follow protocols established by Fisheries and Oceans Canada to ensure that fish resources are not harmed. To reduce our overall water needs and discharge volumes, as much as practical, we propose:

  • Drilling, completion and rig cleaning fluids be recovered and reused.
  • Hydrostatic testing water be recycled and reused.
  • Treated water be considered for use in ice pad and winter access road construction.

To maintain water quality around the facility, we have proposed measures including:

  • Injecting treated wastewater, produced water and other liquid production wastes into a disposal well as the long-term disposal method.
  • Using a self-contained sewage and wastewater treatment system.
  • Monitoring wastewater quality before any discharge.
  • Using secondary containment for fuel storage areas and installing electronic monitoring for detecting spills and leaks.
  • Developing a site-specific spill contingency plan in response to license and permit requirements.
