Environmental stewardship is an important part of our business and of our community investment efforts. Supporting the specific environmental needs of communities enhances our mutual commitment to stewardship. Two innovative programs we fund in this area are the ConocoPhillips Canada School Environmental Quest and Destination Conservation.
In 2007, we challenged kindergarten to Grade 12 schools in Western Canada, Newfoundland and the Northwest Territories to come up with an idea for an environmental or energy efficiency program in their school. If they took us up this challenge, we provided $1,000 to get them started. In the 2008/09 school year, 21 schools signed up, expanding to 50 schools in 2009/10. At the end of each year, a booklet is compiled and provided to all participating schools for knowledge sharing and capacity building.
ConocoPhillips Canada sponsors the Destination Conservation School Environmental Program and its year-end awards event in 45 schools within the Calgary School District. This multi-year environmental literacy program helps schools reduce their environmental impact and fosters social responsibility.
Throughout the year, schools work to develop and implement environmental programs and the district provides any cost savings realized by the effort back to the school, allowing schools to expand their programs and achieve some impressive results.
