Employee and Contractor Safety

Our business is constantly changing, but what never changes is our stand on safety. Safety is the first thing we think about, a continual focus in our operations and the first measure of our performance. Our stand on safety is:

  • We will never compromise safety in the execution of our business.
  • On principle, we believe all incidents are preventable and must be reported.
  • We will investigate incidents, communicating and applying what we learn to prevent recurrence.
  • We believe safety is a critical part of our performance and cannot be separated from production and costs.
  • We embed accountability for safety in all levels of our organization. Our leaders, front-line employees and contractors are all personally responsible for safety performance.

Our ultimate goal is to ensure nobody gets hurt, there are no vehicle collisions and spills in our operations. To bring us closer to this goal, in 2008 and 2009 we focused on:

  • Meeting 100 percent of our commitments in our health, safety and environment action plans, including inspection programs, audits and investigation findings.
  • Developing a contractor services procurement process to evaluate the health, safety and environmental capabilities and performance of contractors before they work for us.
  • Implementing Advanced Safety Auditing, a system for ensuring every leader reinforces health and safety performance expectations with all members of the workforce.
  • Achieving a step-change in driving behaviours through in-vehicle mentoring provided by GPS technology.
