ConocoPhillips

Vehicle Safety

ConocoPhillips Canada staff drive over a million kilometres per year in more than 600 company vehicles. This level of exposure to the hazards of the road led us to implement a number of preventative measures, including driver education and real-time performance feedback.

In 2008, we installed proactive, behavioural-based driver coaching systems in all company vehicles, with the intent to reduce vehicle incidents by 50 percent. The systems monitor vehicle speed, aggressive driving, excessive braking, seat belt violations and any area- specific driving restrictions. It provides real-time, in-cab audible feedback to the driver and allows the driver to make the appropriate corrections.

We believe the real-time monitoring of these systems provide has been extremely effective. Since 2007, we realized a 48 percent vehicle incident reduction and continue to see improvements in 2010.

**Note: high impact vehicle incidents for 2007 and 2008 are vehicle incidents with damage greater than $1,000. In 2009, we re-classified our high-impact vehicle incidents to be those which result in greater than $2,000 in damage. This reflects the increasing cost to repair damage to vehicles.

In 2010, we will continue to develop and fine-tune the monitoring program. Other plans include incorporating driver “work-alone” tools and setting up local parameters for managing road risk, including school zones and high-risk logging roads.
