Remediation and Reclamation
We are working proactively to reclaim and restore sites to equivalent land-use capability. Restoring sites is not only a regulatory requirement, it is a priority for many of our stakeholders. Our work included:
- Submitting 144 reclamation certificates in 2008 and 188 in 2009 for our operations in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. This represented approximately 10 percent of the applications received by Alberta Environment in 2008 and 2009.
- Meeting our sustainable development commitment to assess and remediate 300 sites in 2008. In 2009, we assessed and remediated 187 sites, just short of our goal to complete 200 sites.
- Helping launch Faster Forests, an industry-leading program to accelerate the reclamation of oil sands lease sites.
- Pioneering new technologies, including a system for managing odours at a reclamation site in Turner Valley, Alberta. This technology allowed odours created from the excavation of contaminated soil to be captured and treated without impacting residents of the town.
