Greenhouse Gas Emission Performance

The majority of the greenhouse gases emitted from our operations are carbon dioxide. The primary sources of these emissions are:

  • The burning of natural gas. Our operations burn natural gas as part of producing and processing oil, bitumen and natural gas.
  • Naturally occurring carbon dioxide produced with natural gas from geological formations and separated at the surface.

Our operations also release methane into the atmosphere, mainly as fugitive emissions. Methane’s global warming potential is 21 times higher than carbon dioxide. We continue to implement a Fugitive Emissions Management Program, which helps us identify and reduce these emission sources.

Greenhouse gas emissions from our operated assets varied less than 10 percent from 2007 to 2009.
