ConocoPhillips

Environmental Compliance

Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, Alberta Environment, British Columbia Ministry of Environment and Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment are responsible for ensuring the oil and gas industry complies with the requirements of a variety of acts, regulations and policies. When non-compliance is found, ConocoPhillips Canada is required to correct it and is subject to any fines or penalties imposed.

ConocoPhillips Canada paid $13,267 in fines and penalties in 2008 and $2,000 in 2009 to Alberta Sustainable Resource Development for:

  • Failing to remove pipe abandoned on a lease.
  • Unauthorized re-routing of creek. An access road and pipeline we built blocked the natural drainage from a fish-bearing water body.
  • Unauthorized clearing of trees.
  • Clearing a pipeline right-of-way before confirming that the associated well was ready for tie-in, resulting in unnecessary forest habitat disturbance. This fine issued in 2008 was related to a non-compliance that occurred in 2005.

Similar to what we do following any enforcement actions, we review the non-compliance with the working group to determine the cause. We review our processes and additional training may be implemented to ensure repeat contraventions do not occur.
