Emissions from our operations include sulphur oxides, oxides of nitrogen, volatile organic compounds, particulate matter and benzene. These emissions are largely created during combustion, flaring and venting.
Our emissions levels from 2007 to 2009 were influenced by:
Between 2007 and 2009, sulphur dioxide emissions increased by 246 percent, primarily due to the start-up of the Surmont Phase 1 oil sands facility as well as an increase in the concentration of hydrogen sulphide gas flared at two gas batteries that process natural gas.
Emissions of oxides of nitrogen remained relatively unchanged from 2007 to 2009.
Between 2007 and 2009, particulate matter emissions decreased 17 percent due to decreased well-test flaring resulting from reduced drilling and flaring at 15 facilities.
Emissions of volatile organic compounds remained relatively constant from 2007 to 2009.
