Our Air Pollutant Emissions Performance

Emissions from our operations include sulphur oxides, oxides of nitrogen, volatile organic compounds, particulate matter and benzene. These emissions are largely created during combustion, flaring and venting.

Our emissions levels from 2007 to 2009 were influenced by:

  • The start-up of our Surmont oil sands project in 2007.
  • Reductions in drilling activity in Western Canada Gas, resulting in less well test flaring.
  • The implementation of energy efficiency projects.

* 2007 includes Oil Sands start up year, partial production

Between 2007 and 2009, sulphur dioxide emissions increased by 246 percent, primarily due to the start-up of the Surmont Phase 1 oil sands facility as well as an increase in the concentration of hydrogen sulphide gas flared at two gas batteries that process natural gas.

* 2007 includes Oil Sands start up year, partial production

Emissions of oxides of nitrogen remained relatively unchanged from 2007 to 2009.

* 2007 includes Oil Sands start up year, partial production

Between 2007 and 2009, particulate matter emissions decreased 17 percent due to decreased well-test flaring resulting from reduced drilling and flaring at 15 facilities.

* 2007 includes Oil Sands start up year, partial production

Emissions of volatile organic compounds remained relatively constant from 2007 to 2009.

Reporting

We report annually on emissions from our Western Canada Gas and Oil Sands operations in:

  • The National Pollutant Release Inventory, where we report on 324 facilities.
  • Alberta Environment emissions reports, where we report our compliance against conditions stated in facility approvals.
